Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet’s romance was the definition of relationship goals ahead of their January 2022 split.
In the early 2000s, the lovebirds were introduced through mutual friends at a Los Angeles jazz club. The Cosby Show alum told Net-A-Porter in 2018 that they “have been together” from that day on.
“What’s cool about Jason is that he’s an alpha male who stands for love and family. And to circle back to my own wounds, having an absent father, then to be fully met by a man of that stature, is really incredible,” she explained to the publication. “Jason embodies a rare form of masculinity in this day and age — he’s a leader; he’s generous. Just in terms of charisma, physique, the right use of power, responsibility, work ethic, you can go down the line.”
Momoa and Bonet welcomed their daughter, Lola, in 2007 and son, Nakoa-Wolf, in 2008, but they didn’t say “I do” until 2017. Us Weekly broke the news of the couple’s secret wedding ceremony, which took place at their home in Topanga, California.
The Aquaman star has long been a fan of Bonet. In 2019, he admitted to Esquire that the High Fidelity actress was his childhood crush when she starred on The Cosby Show.
“I mean, I didn’t tell her that. I didn’t let her know I was a stalker until after we had the kids,” he joked, adding that “if someone says something isn’t possible, I’m like, ‘Listen here, I married Lisa Bonet. Anything is f–king possible.’”
Bonet was previously married to Lenny Kravitz from 1987 to 1993. The now-exes are parents of actress Zoë Kravitz. Despite parting ways, Bonet has maintained a good relationship with the “American Woman” rocker — and he even developed a friendship with Momoa.
“People can’t believe how tight Jason and I are, or how tight I still am with Zoë’s mom, how we all relate,” Lenny said in Men’s Health’s November 2020 issue. “We just do it because that’s what you do. You let love rule, right?”
The Grammy winner continued, “I mean, obviously, after a breakup, it’s work — it takes some work and time, healing and reflection, et cetera. But as far as Jason and I? Literally the moment we met, we were like, ‘Oh, yeah. I love this dude.’”
Momoa, however, announced in January 2022 that the pair called it quits after four years of marriage.

The Cosby Show alum detailed the first time she met Momoa through mutual friends at a jazz club in Los Angeles in 2004. “I can’t say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met,” Bonet told Porter magazine in an interview published in March 2018. The duo made a pit stop at a café to partake in Guinness and grits, and the rest is history. “In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do,” she explained. “He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!”
Bonet gave birth to the couple’s first child, daughter Lola, in July 2007. The actress was already the mother of then 18-year-old daughter Zoë from her marriage to Lenny Kravitz, which ended in April 1993.
Rumors began swirling that the Game of Thrones alum and the Ray Donovan star tied the knot months after welcoming their daughter. However, the couple were not actually legally married at this time.
The pair’s second child, son Nakoa-Wolf, arrived in December 2008.
Bonet and Momoa shared the screen in his 2014 film, Road to Paloma, in which the actor wrote, directed and starred. The Aquaman star told Collider in February 2014 that directing his beau, who played his love interest, was “a motherf—ker,” adding: “It was a very hard scene to shoot. She didn’t think so, but it was. It was effortless and we got it in 15 minutes, but it was like trying to capture the first time we met, and yet have it be three times that. It was all the things we weren’t saying, and we had to capture it in the perfect light. I didn’t want to reshoot it. It’s hard to get those real, true, beautiful moments.” The costars teamed up again that year in The Red Road. The actor said of collaborating with Bonet: “It’s an honor. In this business, we have to travel so far away from our families. We have two children, so if we can work together, that’s awesome. Before I met her, it was a dream to work with her.”
The Justice League star opened up about his life as a father in an interview with Men’s Health. “I really can’t tell you what the hell I was doing before I had kids,” he admitted. “Just f—king off. Wasting time. I think I was pretty reckless and definitely a bit out of control. Now I’m more focused. I probably love myself more and take care of myself more because I want to stick around.”
Us Weekly broke the news in November 2017 that the twosome exchanged vows the month prior. “Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet had an official wedding a few weeks ago at their house in Topanga, California,” a source told Us at the time. “Apparently they weren’t officially married until then! They said they ‘made it official.’”
Momoa revealed during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden that his crush on Bonet went back further than expected. “Ever since I was, like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV and I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one.’ I’m like, ‘I’m gonna stalk you for the rest of my life, and I’m gonna get you.’ I am a full-fledged stalker,” he joked. “I didn’t tell her that till we had two babies. Otherwise it’d be creepy.”
The actress opened up to Porter about why she fell for her husband. “What’s cool about Jason is that he’s an alpha male who stands for love and family,” she explained. “And to circle back to my own wounds, having an absent father, then to be fully met by a man of that stature, is really incredible. Jason embodies a rare form of masculinity in this day and age — he’s a leader; he’s generous. Just in terms of charisma, physique, the right use of power, responsibility, work ethic, you can go down the line.”
Momoa and Kravitz confirmed their close bond when the Conan the Barbarian actor hosted Saturday Night Live. While the “Low” singer supported his “brother” at the show, the Hawaii native shared on Instagram that he got himself and his wife’s ex matching rings to commemorate their friendship.
Cuteness overload! Lola, Nakoa-Wolf and Bonet showed their love for Momoa on the red carpet at the Los Angeles Aquaman premiere. The family posed together for several cute photos, and Mom and Dad were not afraid to pack on some PDA either.
While attending the Academy Awards, the pair coordinated their outfits by wearing looks by Karl Lagerfeld.
Momoa and Bonet attended the NYC premiere of Game of Thrones’ final season and the Aquaman star could not get over his wife’s appearance. “You look gorgeous,” he said told the Cosby Show alum on his Instagram Story while the pair walked into the event. “I love you.” Momoa also had a hilarious reaction when a fan yelled, “Jason, your wife looks beautiful!” He screamed back: “I know! I f—king know!”
The couple’s love continued to show when they hit the red carpet at the GoT premiere. The duo posed as they stood in front of photographers and Momoa even leaned over to be closer to Bonet’s height.
In an interview for Esquire, Momoa revealed the sweet nickname that he calls Bonet while discussing whether their family would adopt a dog. “It’s up to Mama. Mama is the boss — everyone knows that,” he explained.
The See actor wore a tank top while sitting inside the Golden Globes, giving his Tom Ford suit jacket to Bonet.
Momoa surprised Bonet by restoring her 1965 Ford Mustang, which is the first-ever car she bought at the age of 17. “I never thought it would look like this,” he said in a video for his YouTube channel. “To be in this passenger’s seat with my wife here and surprise her and our babies in the back, riding in her first car from when she was 17? I’m excited to see her face.”
Momoa announced that after four years of marriage he and Bonet decided to split. “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that ~ as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty,” the pair wrote in a joint statement via his Instagram. “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~ to be who we are learning to become … Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our children. Teaching our children what’s possible ~ Living the Prayer May Love Prevail.”
