Who doesn’t love some tasty Thanksgiving food? With an array of flavorful, festive dishes to choose from it can be hard to pick just one preferred Turkey Day offering — but stars including Meghan Markle and Taylor Swift have managed to narrow it down to a few favorites.
In a past entry from her now defunct lifestyle website, The Tig, Markle dismissed the idea that Thanksgiving has to be all about turkey, and shared a recipe featuring a different British bird instead.
“If you’re looking for an alternative to the famed and lauded turkey dinner that’s oh-so-popular this time of year, look no further than this delicious and easy recipe for Cornish game hens,” the Bench author, who shares son Archie and daughter Lili with husband Prince Harry, wrote on the blog.
What’s more? The California native actually stumbled upon that recipe thanks to another star — The Hunger Games actor Stanley Tucci. The recipe the Duchess of Sussex referenced was taken from Tucci’s 2014 cookbook, written with wife Felicity Blunt, called The Tucci Table.
Believe it or not, Markle isn’t the only famous face who looks beyond turkey on Thanksgiving.
Chrissy Teigen has long been critical of the “dry” protein and typically opts to cook chicken instead. “I just really feel like people feel like they’re forced to eat turkey, and nobody really enjoys it,” she explained in 2017. “Serve them chicken and they’ll be much happier.”
The Cravings author is also known to go a little crazy when it comes to Thanksgiving sides. Some of her favorites include her mom’s scalloped potatoes and a collard greens recipe that husband John Legend’s grandmother, Marjorie Stephens, has been making for more than 60 years.
The “All Too Well” singer is another fan of Thanksgiving sides — particularly the sweet potato casserole from Del Frisco’s Grill, which has locations all over the country. In the past, the “You Need to Calm Down” songstress has called the decadent dish “amazing.”
Even Tom Brady breaks his diet on Turkey Day for the delicious carbs. He revealed his grandmother’s biscuit recipe his his favorite. “She is resting in Heaven now but she would be happy to know that her tradition lives on in our house,” the athlete shared in 2017. “My biscuits don’t taste nearly as good as hers, but after being smothered in butter and syrup, it’s tougher to know the difference!”

“It’s either my stuffing or the turkey,” the cookbook author revealed to Food Network in 2015. “Because we play around with doing the turkey differently every year. And last year, we deep-fried it for the first time, and we’ll probably be doing that again. And we always cook an extra turkey just so we can make gumbo the next day.”
“As a young boy, my favorite part of every holiday was eating my Grandma’s biscuits,” the athlete wrote via Instagram on Thanksgiving in 2017. “The first question I would ask when I walked into her apartment was, ‘Grandma, did you make biscuits for me?’ And of course, she always did. She is resting in Heaven now but she would be happy to know that her tradition lives on in our house. My biscuits don’t taste nearly as good as hers, but after being smothered in butter and syrup, it’s tougher to know the difference!”
“I don’t consider myself a great cook, but I have a few things that I can cook. I make really good fried chicken and I make really nice cream corn and my mom does the rest. She does the stuffing and banana pudding and potato pie. So we get a chance to enjoy her cooking,” the singer exclusively told Us in November 2020.
“I love a roast chicken for the holidays. That’s just always a thing that I like to make for everyone,” the One Tree Hill alum exclusively told Us in November 2020. As for her favorite cocktail? “I’ve always been an old-fashioned girl,” she said. “I think for me things change a little more seasonally. Especially because I really try to be seasonal even with the food I’m comparing, and I do more shopping at farmers’ markets than grocery stores and things like that.” She added: “I honestly make a really mean old-fashioned. It’s one of those things that, yes, it’s always on rotation at my place.”
The Black-ish star’s go-to dessert is his grandmother’s sweet potato pie. “It’s been a staple in our family. Of course, over the years the recipe has been passed down and then you find things that you want to add to it and put your own spin on it. But at its core it’s still the recipe that we grew up eating. It’s a part of the family,” he exclusively told Us in November 2020. “One year we didn’t have sweet potato pie because every other family member thought the other family member was bringing the pie. So we made a vow that would never happen again. And then the next year everybody brought a sweet potato pie. So now we are on the family thread. Any holiday, ‘OK. Who is bringing the pie? OK, who is making the backup?’ That’s how we are now. That’s how serious we are about our sweet potato pie dessert.”
The Goldbergs actress will always have French’s Original Crispy Fried Onions on Thanksgiving. “I genuinely love French’s fried onions. Like, it is a problem at my house,” she exclusively told Us in November 2020. “I know that if I’m gonna buy them for a recipe I just need to buy twice the amount because they are going to be eaten by me or my husband or my husband’s friends. You just snack on them. They are delicious.”
On her now-shuttered lifestyle blog, The Tig, she shared one of her most beloved Thanksgiving dishes. “If you’re looking for an alternative to the famed and lauded turkey dinner that’s oh-so-popular this time of year, look no further than this delicious and easy recipe for Cornish game hens from Stanley Tucci’s delightful cookbook, The Tucci Table,” she wrote. Tucci’s recipe includes shallots, fresh sage leaves and pancetta.
The celebrity chef told Us in November 2019 that he has “a few” Thanksgiving favorites. When it comes to potatoes, the Beat Bobby Flay star is fond of making mashed potatoes with “lots of milk and butter,” and salt and pepper. He then serves the side in a bowl, makes a well and adds a green chile queso sauce to the middle of the dish. As he put it: “Literally people bathe in it … people look for ‘em every year.”
Though her famous family occasionally enlists a chef to help with the holiday meal, the Good American designer loves to whip up an annual Thanksgiving feast all on her own. “I’m normally in Cleveland cooking every single dish,” the E! personality revealed on The Real in November 2019. “I cook it all but … I love desserts. I’m famous for my Oreo cake.”
The “Bad Blood” singer can’t get enough of the sweet potato casserole from Del Frisco’s Grill, which Us Weekly shared the recipe for in November 2018. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she previously told InStyle. “Oh my God, it’s amazing.”
The Live With Kelly and Ryan cohost spilled her family’s Turkey Day faves in November 2018. “[Son] Joaquin is really big on the sage and butter pork chop. He loves it so much!” she told Entertainment Tonight. “My daughter is more like my people. We like a whipped mashed potato, but we also like a mashed sweet potato. We like anything mashed and carbohydrate.”
For Thanksgiving in November 2017, the Limetown star proved she had a penchant for pie. “One pie, two pie, three pie … snore,” she captioned an Instagram, snapshot of several of the popular sweet treats. “I hope you all enjoy your food coma naps and family time today. Happy Thanksgiving!”
“Screw turkey. Turkey sucks. Turkey is gross!” the Bring the Funny judge told InStyle in October 2017. “I do two whole roasted chickens because chicken is so much better and you can still get a great gravy out of it. I just really feel like people feel like they’re forced to eat turkey, and nobody really enjoys it. Surprise everyone. Serve them chicken, and they’ll be much happier.”
The Cravings author also loves a hearty carb-heavy dish. “My mom’s scalloped potatoes have been made in my home more than anything else. They’re creamy and loaded with both bacon and ham,” Teigen explained to Vogue in December 2016. “We make a huge pot and end up reheating them for the entire week. They get better and better!”
When Yahoo asked The Librarians alum about her favorite Thanksgiving eats in November 2016, she revealed that she loves to mix and match her holiday foods. “Sweet potatoes with gravy,” she declared. “I love a flavor combination, so sweet potatoes with gravy, a bite of turkey and a little bit of cranberry.”
In her book, In the Kitchen With Kris, which was published in October 2014, the Kardashian-Jenner family matriarch shared some of her Thanksgiving favorites. “I have a notebook just for Thanksgiving, which is my second favorite holiday,” she wrote. “I rotate dishes from year to year, but of course, there are family favorites that always make it to the table [like sweet potato soufflé.]”
The American Horror Story star told Us in November 2011 that she’s a particular fan of a very popular holiday side. “On Thanksgiving we always just have a big feast,” she dished. “Stuffing is my favorite food in the world! I actually have been known to go buy stuffing and make it in the middle of summer.”
While some stars don’t love turkey, the Iron Man 3 actress is all about the big bird. “Turkey will always be the main event of Thanksgiving (at least in my house) and a whole turkey is the way to go if you’re feeding at least 12,” she told Huffington Post in May 2011. “But if your party is smaller, the stuffed turkey breast turns out to be a great halfway point.”
